A very good student cello, made by
Andrey Denisov
(1937 - 2011)

Durban, 2011

In his second cello (this one), Andrey Denisov (b. 1937) overcame all the obstacles encountered in his first cello. The materials are much better, purfling is more successful and the scroll, nicely cut, shows confidence and balance. The varnish is really of a nice quality - a velvety transparent affair of an attractive golden brown with a tinge of amber. In all, this is a good instrument that convinces as serious work.

Andrey Denisov spent most of his life in Russia, where he was a foremost surgeon. Upon retirement he moved to South Africa, joining his family in Durban. There his lifelong interest in violins and violinmaking became his main occupation. After producing several violins, Denisov then turned his attention to making cellos of which this instrument is the second. This cello was used extensively in the orchestra by Boris Kerimov, Principal Cellist of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, as his second cello. Andrey Denisov passed away late in 2011.

This cello is well-toned and easy to play.
