A Bulgarian viola by
Dimitar GEORGIEV

Kazanlak. 1946

Dimitar Georgiev was the first Bulgarian violinmaker to complete his apprenticeship in Germany and Cremona and who went on to attain international acclaim as an important maker after his return to Bulgaria.

This viola bears a label, written partly in Cyrillic, which reads as follows: 'Stadivarius Model, made by Dimitar Georgiev in Kazanlak 1946.' The label is signed by Georgiev personally. (See photo below) One can assume that it is his personal work, or that the instrument was made under his supervision.

The top is of excellent finely grained tone spruce. The two-piece back is of well-flamed maple with a straight medium curl. Purfling is sharp but somewhat rought in the corners. The instrument was prefessionally revarnished in 2003 and has an attractive red-brown colour. The varnish is transparent and enhances the beauty of the wood.

This viola is well-toned.
